Reflection of the Years

From 2004 to 2009

As we embark on our 6th year in Lionism, we reflect back on what has been:

       I.            2004-2005

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT – CLEMENT KUSIAK

INTERNATIONAL THEME AND LOGO – “SHARE SUCCESS THROUGH SERVICE”

CHARTER PRESIDENT – DR. PRISCILLA PIZARRO

DISTRICT GOVERNOR - LEN BLOTTIN

LION OF THE YEAR – ALICE LEGASPI

PRESIDENT’S APPRECIATION AWARDEE – LUZ GALINDEZ

During our Charter year, in 2004-2005, we were Gung Ho and enthusiastic. Under the presidency of Dr. Priscila Pizarro, we managed to charter two LEO Clubs simultaneously, a feat unprecedented in District 4-L6. We joined a four-day medical mission in San Quintin, Mexico and participated in some local health fairs; conducted a garage sale and a breakfast fundraiser. We consistently attended Pre-Cabinet and Cabinet meetings and conventions. Three new Melvin Jones Fellows were created to add to the four MJF transfer charter members. Lion Lydia Duro was the Sweetwater Zone Chair and the Chair of the Diabetes Awareness Committee; Lion Carl Batuyong was a member of the Budget and Audit Committee. Two of our members, Lion Dr. Precy Pizarro and Lion Alice Legaspi joined the Paradise Valley Global Medical Mission to the Philippines.

    II.            2005-2006

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT – ASHOK METHA

INTERNATIONAL THEME AND LOGO – “PASSION TO EXCEL”

CLUB PRESIDENT – ARMANDO ABAYON

DISTRICT GOVERNOR – SCOTTY SCHUETZ

LION OF THE YEAR – LUZ GALINDEZ

PRESIDENT’S APPRECIATION AWARDEE – DIANA VITIN

The following year, with Lion Armando Abayon as the president, we twinned with Club de Leones Tijuana Kumiai. We began to assist our twin club in the monthly Breakfast Feeding of the homeless in Tijuana, Mexico every first Monday of the month. We also began to help the volunteer carpenters of Harbison Canyon Lions Club by providing lunch on some Saturdays that they work on the fire ravaged homes in Harbison Canyon. We ventured in a massive fundraising at the Qualcomm Concession Stands, a very demanding and strenuous activity, but a huge fundraiser. We participated in another four-day medical mission in Tecate, Mexico on October 2005. We partnered with Heritage Elementary School in the first “Walk for Literacy” to raise money for the purchase of books; about $20,000.00 was raised and donated to the school. We applied for our first International Assistance Grant from LCIF and we sponsored our first international medical mission to our native country, the Philippines, and twinned with Olongapo City Peninsula Lions Club who hosted our medical mission. Three new Melvin Jones Fellows, a progressive MJF and two Dwight Stanford Fellows were created. Lion Lydia Duro continued to be the Sweetwater Zone Chair and Diabetes Awareness Committee Chair and Lion Carl Batuyong was still a member of the Budget and Audit Committee.

 III.            2006-2007

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT – JIMMY ROSS

INTERNATIONAL THEME – “WE SERVE”

CLUB PRESIDENT – LUZ GALINDEZ

DISTRICT GOVERNOR – ALICE TANA

LION OF THE YEAR – NONE

PRESIDENT’S APPRECIATION AWARDEE – AIDA TUMALAD

On the third year, the club became more actively involved with district activities with the appointment of Lion Luz Galindez as Assistant Cabinet Secretary and International Club Twinning Chair and at the same time serving as president of the club. All of the club members who are in the medical profession became members of the Diabetes Awareness Committee. We continued as volunteer non-profit organization in Qualcomm Stadium. Although the participants were not as enthusiastic as the previous year, it was still a good fundraiser. Even the monthly participation and attendance to the breakfast feeding of the homeless in Tijuana with our twin club CLTK and the feeding of the volunteer carpenters of Harbison Canyon, suffered some setbacks. The second “Walk for Literacy” was conducted; it raised only about $10,000.00. The club collaborated with eight (8) Filipino based Lions Clubs to send 100 computers to the Smokey Mountain Foundation through Father Benigno Beltran in Tondo, Manila, Philippines.

 IV.            2007-2008

INTERNATIONAL THEME AND LOGO – “CHALLENGE TO CHANGE”

CLUB PRESIDENT – CARL BATUYONG

LION OF THE YEAR – LUZ GALINDEZ

PRESIDENT’S APPRECIATION AWARDEE - NONE

On the fourth year, Lion Carl Batuyong took the presidency. Lion Luz Galindez was again appointed the Assistant Cabinet Secretary and International Club Twinning Chair. She was the primary district directory creator and served as the District Convention Co-Chair. The Qualcomm Concession Stand Fundraising was jumpstarted and revived. Two new Melvin Jones Fellows were created bringing our total MJF to twelve (12), with one a PMJF. The second International Medical Mission to the Philippines was conducted. The club was awarded the MD-4 Academy of Awards for Most Outstanding Project on February, 2008 in Modesto, CA for the "Walk for Literacy". It also received the District 4-L6 Emerging Club of the Year and the Best Medium Club of the Year on May, 2008 in Ontario, CA. Lion Luz Galindez received the Emerging Lion of the Year Award, an MD-4 Excellence Medal and an International Leadership Medal. She also became one of the three finalist in the LCI Outstanding Lion in the Challenge to Change Award.

The collaboration with twin club, “Club de Leones Tijuana Kumiai” in the monthly feeding of the homeless in Tijuana, Mexico was stopped due to the violence occuring across the border.
